Will the real Marvin Candle please stand up

January 4th, 2009 - No Comments

This video was presented during the LOST panel at Comic-Con 2008, shot by Dan Bronson, one of the participants in the the Dharma recruitment drive that was running during the convention, and shows what is supposedly classified top secret footage of the man we previously knew as Dr Marvin Candle/Edgar Halliwax/Mark Wickmund etc etc. The video is introduced by Hans van Eeghen (who was also part of the ARG that started are Comic-Con). I’m going to look at this in two parts, first a recap of the video, second some theories about what it means.

The Video

Chang sits down and begins to introduce himself as Dr Marvin Candle before he pauses and says that its not worth playing games anymore, and that if you’re watching this you already know that his name is Pierre Chang. There is a baby crying in the background, Chang get gets up and yells for Lara (wife?) to take him outside. He says that he only has one chance at ‘this’.

He explains that he was brought to the island many years ago and has been working on a number of experiments, during his explanation the image breaks up and there is a lot of static and the sound is lost briefly. There is a random image flashed during the static (the third image below) not sure its relevant or not, can’t really make out what it is, might be trees, might not be?

He says that if he can keep “this pinhole” open long enough that we should be receiving this message roughly 30 years in the future, he says that the current US President is a man named George W Bush, and that we share digital information instantaneously across “something called internet”. Both things that he would/should/could not really know in the mid 1970’s. He adds that he and his colleagues are all dead, victims of a violent purge, hat they are apparently powerless to escape. Is this Ben’s purge? or another purge that happened earlier?

Season 5

Screenshots and Theories from the Season 5 Promo

October 30th, 2008 - 6 Comments

I’m trying really hard to make sure I don’t read any spoilers about season 5. Last year while waiting for season 4 to begin it got the better of me and I thought I’d just read a few bits. One of those ‘bits’ was who the Oceanic Six were, although the spoilers I read said that Jin was one of the six, another ‘bit’ was that Aaron was off the island and being cared for by Kate who was treating him as her own. Both were things that I’d rather have found out by just watching.

So since all we’ve got so far is the 40 seconds or so from the second half of the season 5 promo, I’m going to start theorising. Why? Because I can. Below are a selection of the more interesting shots from the promo, click each to view them full-size. Also I’d say that most of these are from the first couple of episodes since they’ve only shot the first half a dozen or so.

First shot is the Dharma logo that flashes up a couple of time around the middle of the promo. Then there’s Locke on the ground with somebody pointing a gun at him. Locke certainly looks surprised, not sure who its is though, perhaps one of the Others, or perhaps someone else, we don’t know “when” the island is. Juliet looks like she’s discovered a hatch very similar to the Swan hatch that Locke and Boone found way back when. Since the Swan blew up, its probably not it, but another station. Or again it could be a case of “when” not “where”.

Dan is in a cave, and he’s got a Dharma safety hat on. Could he possibly be underneath the Orchid station where the “donkey wheel” is/was. Locke, it either night or he’s inside, maybe being held captive by whoever was pointing that gun at him. Alpert with a flaming torch, I hope we find out some more about Alpert and his apparent immortality. Someone with a compass, Locke had a compass at one point so it could be him, trying to find Jacob maybe. Hurley with a gun.

Looks like Hurley and Sayid pay someone a visit. Sayid kicks ass, Hurley cheers him on. My (probably way off the mark) theory is that they’ve gone to get Des. Why? Continue reading Screenshots and Theories from the Season 5 Promo →

Christian Shephard

December 10th, 2007 - No Comments

Is Jack’s Dad more important to the mythology of LOST than we think? Consider these things. He is the first “vision of a dead person” that we come across on the island, right back at the beginning of the first season. Jack found his coffin, but there was no body in it, he didn’t find the body, assuming of course that Christian is actually still dead.

Christian has crossed paths with a lot of the survivors at different points, appearing in many flashbacks. He shared a drink with Sawyer, he hired Ana Lucia as a bodyguard and he is Claire’s Father (therefore Aaron’s Grandfather). They are just the one that come to mind instantly, there could very well be other that I’m forgetting, but I guess I’ll come across them in my re-watching.
