Another great episode, and all with neither sight nor sound from Ben and the Oceanic Six. I don’t know about you, but personally I think the Desmond-centric episodes are my favourites. Just think how good “Flashes before your eyes” and “The Constant” were.
When are the events, both on and off the island, taking place?
Well Alpert tells Locke that its 1954, and from what we see it would appear that Desmond’s part is taking place around the same time as Ben’s attempts to bring the Oceanic Six back together. When we see Des, with son Charlie, on the boat the kid looks about 2, Charles Widmore also says that he hasn’t seen Penny for about three years.
“You just couldn’t stay away could you”
When “the science team” is capture and Miles bravely tells them that Daniel is their leader the girl (Ellie) says to Dan “you just couldn’t stay away could you”, now I think this is because she thinks their US Military, but there was just something about the way that she said it.
Speaking of Ellie, who is she, is she important?
Given that the losties time-warped back out of 1954 at the end of the episode we might not see Ellie again, or will we? It could be possible that an older Ellie is still with the other in ‘present time’. The role she played in the episode and also that Dan told her about their time travel makes me wonder if there is more to come. Now, if sometime later in the series they jump back to, say, 1955 then Alpert, Widmore, Ellie et al might actually believe them assuming of course that they noticed that they vanished from right before their eyes.
What did Faraday do to the woman that Desmond goes to visit
Given that he was a scientist doing research into transporting rats brains through time, what are the chances she was a human lab rat and he tried the same thing on her? Her Sister says that she is currently “away”, the same term that Faraday used to describe where Desmond and Minkowski were during their time traveling adventures. If she is “away” in the same way, where or when is she? Could she be on the island? And why is Widmore basically paying to keep her alive?
Why does young Widmore have ‘Jones’ as his name badge?
In 1954 is he more important than we might first think, since he just appears to be like all the other others, right up until he challenges Alpert who then reveals who he actually is. Do the other others know him as Widmore or Jones, and if they know him as Jones, why? Is he hiding something from them?
“I didn’t know Richard would be here.”, “Richards always been here.”, “How old is he?”, “Old…”
Locke asking Juliet the question we all want an answer for. How old is he? Are we going to see Alpert hanging around at the four-toed statue anytime soon? I feel that chances of that happening are pretty good actually.
Why would the others leave a huge friggin’ hydrogen bomb just dangling midair like that?
That was my first thought when the camera spun a round to reveal the bomb. All I can think is that thats where the US Military had it and they haven’t moved it. That still doesn’t explain why you’d leave it there hanging from that one tiny rope though… the others seem like pretty smart people, the treatment of the bomb… not so smart. As Dan explained they need to bury the bomb, and since the island is still therein 2004 they obviously did… but where.
Why does Widmore give up Faraday’s mother’s address so easily?
Seemed odd to me, someone like Widmore just doing what Des says. Perhaps he though he should go a long with it to keep Penny safe? Or maybe he didn’t actually give him Faraday’s mother’s address, maybe he’s setting him up…
So Faraday’s mother is in Los Angeles and she’s a private person.
The kind of private person who lives under a church in a secret Dharma station perhaps? We know, or at least a re fairly sure, that Ms Hawking was in LA. Also if Hawking is Dan’s mother then that would explain why there was not record of any Mrs Faraday at Oxford.
We now know why Alpert visits lock as a child
This wasn’t really what I was expecting, but then I wasn’t expecting them to travel 50 years back in time either. For those that are interested, when Alpert did visit young Locke the compass was one of the objects that Locke indicated was his (along with a vile of sand and a knife – Alpert didn’t appreciate Locke selection of the knife either).
Charlotte has collapsed face-first in her own blood.
That can’t be good, we’ve seen what happens to other people who’ve suffered adverse affects from skipping through time. Will she live, does she need to find her constant (maybe its a polar bear…).
Ellie (the blond girl from the 50s) is most likely going to turn out to be Eloise Hawking (aka Daniel Faraday’s mother, living in the church in LA). Daniel said he recognized her and she has the same accent.
Widmore had the name “Jones” on his uniform because they were all wearing U.S. uniforms, which they must’ve taken from the U.S. soldiers that they killed. This reveals a trend with the “others” who also took on the homes and clothes of the Dharma Initiative when killing them off.
Also, an interesting note that may or may not important to the plot of Lost. The lady at Oxford that told Desmond there was no record of Faraday was played by the same actress that worked behind the desk at Oceanic Airlines and gave Hurley his ticket (way back in season 1 – “The Numbers”).
Ahh, didn’t realise that Ms Hawking’s first name was Eloise, but I had wondering if Ellie was Faraday’s mother since the time difference fitted. That would also answer my question about if Hawking is Dharma or not, so she’s not Dharma she’s an other.
Didn’t even click that they were wearing the US uniforms, makes sense why the names don’t match up. I think Alpert or someone else even says something about them taking their tents and clothes.
